In its core, the Super Mental series is meant to spread awareness on mental health. The stigma surrounding this topic is so engrained that even 2022 it is improper to discuss the fact that the ‘abnormal’ has become the world’s average. We can joke about it, but we cannot have a real discussion. Do any of us truly know someone who hasn’t struggled with their mentality? Not just extremes like hallucinations or delusions, but things that no one takes seriously: intrusive thoughts, high functioning anxiety, non-suicidal depression. We all experience mental ailments; the brain is an organ. It is susceptible to diseases like the rest of our bodies. We extend a helping hand to a friend with a broken arm, why do we not show that same kindness to those with invisible scars?

On its surface, the series follows the stories of different people through their struggles with various mental diagnoses while gaining… unusual powers. Cerebral Remedium Inc. was founded by a brother-sister duo with a dream of curing all mental disorders. Overnight, posters appeared around New York state promoting the first round of human clinical trials for the medication. Those eighteen and older who were interested must be diagnosed with a mental disorder: anything from mild anxiety to Capgras syndrome, and even schizotypal personality disorder. If accepted, they are given free medication, therapy, and physical exams to keep track of their physical and mental health. After a while, participants begin to experience bizarre side effects. Orinthia was in the trial for a full year before she started randomly hearing voices – other people’s thoughts. Dearan only took a few months to develop sound wave manipulation. Zephyr, Pandara, Kini, and countless others learn the true purpose of the study after it’s too late.
